With a new school year rapidly approaching, it's a good idea to make sure everyone starts working their way back to the school year sleep schedule if it differs from what you were doing this summer.  Younger kids should be getting to bed between 8 pm and 9pm, if they get up around 6 - 7 am.  Elementary aged kids need 9 - 10 hours of sleep, and teens surprisingly need between 9 and 11 hours.

Today's activity: learn about grains.  What grains were used in ancient civilizations?  What part of the world did corn come from?  What's the difference between whole wheat bread and white bread?  What do grains look like when they grow?  Where do they grow?  How are they transformed from the natural state into edible form?  Find a recipe for a grain you're not familiar with, and cook it.  You can boil it and make a hot cereal/porridge or grind it into flour.

The kids spent five fun-filled, no vegetable days getting to know Grandma and Grandpa while hubby and I spent the time doing all the things we don't while the kids are around.  And aside from the time for "just the two of us," I'm delighted the kids are experiencing the joys of time with the grandparents.

What I needed to remember is that a childhood fear is typically irrational, but it feels very real for the child experiencing it.  What originally was a physical power struggled was transformed, thanks to a time out, into a good conversation that allowed his fears to relax and for him to get a good night's sleep.

Recently my local news did a story on Spice, an herbal "blend" that kids are using to get a marijuana-like high.  Little research has been done on Spice, but what has been done indicates that it may not be what the ingredients claim.  Instead, researchers suspect that Spice is purposely laced with a synthetic cannabinoid, or substance that acts like marijuana in the body.

I was just reading one of the mommy forums I subscribe to and a mother posted that she keeps catching her 14 year old son watching porn on their family computer, and she's wondering what to do.  Her top idea is to cut him off from the computer but to buy him a "harmless" magazine like Maxim or Playboy.  I think her question and the extreme range of answers illustrate just how uneducated and insecure parents feel about parenting.  But when it gets into issues that we, as adults, haven't even completely figured out, our kids are in a tricky and uncomfortable place.
