Tips for Parents:  Book Week | PDF

Español/Spanish: Consejos para padres - La semana del libro

Children’s Book Week is in late November.  Encourage your children to develop a lifelong passion for reading by sharing with them some award winning books. The following Tips for Parenst will help you prepare for Book Week.

Reading is much more than letting your eyes wander over a page.  It is a process of thinking, talking, and writing that begins before you even pick up a book.  You can help your child be a more effective reader by teaching your child to ask questions:

  • What does the title suggest?
  • What might happen in the story?
  • What do the pictures remind you of?

Remember that it’s okay to stop in the middle of a story and think about what you are reading:

  • Is this situation realistic?
  •  If you were a character in the story, what would you do differently?
  • What assumptions is the author making?

After finishing the story, don’t just put the book away.  Ask more questions.  Encourage your children to write down questions and ideas as they read to discuss later with you, a teacher, or a friend.  If you teach your children to ask questions, they will begin to think critically on their own.

Celebrate reading by:

  • Reading aloud every night
  • Exploring your local library
  • Writing your own book
  • Pretending you are a character in a book
  • Reading several books by the same author
  • Putting on a play
  • Choosing a Children's Choice or Young Adults' Choice Book
