Tips for Parents: Title IX | PDF
Español/Spanish: Consejos para padres - El Título IX
In 1976, congress passed Title IX of the Higher Education Act. Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded programs. Schools, including athletic programs, were no longer able to discriminate on the basis of sex. Women and girls who were barred from traditionally “men’s sports” are now legally allowed to play.
Today, Title IX continues to defend women and girls from discrimination in federally funded programs. In places where there are no organized girls’ teams, girls join boys on the wrestling team, football field, and water polo team.
